Numerous ingenious money-saving ideas have streamlined the spa service
Position Assistant country club and spa manager, Swinton Estate
Age 29
Nominator Emma Arnold, marketing assistant, Swinton Estate
Hannah Newsome has built her career at Yorkshire’s Swinton Estate by driving commercial growth and team culture across the 200-acre hotel’s spa operations.
After starting in a part-time role, Newsome progressed through every level of the spa to now oversee a team of 30 people and play a central role in its financial performance.
Over the past year, her commercial impact has been significant. By taking control of forecasting and restructuring the booking diary, she increased average monthly treatment revenue by 21%. She also led the search for a new product partner, introducing Oskia to align with the spa’s sustainable, British-led approach, while supporting annual revenue growth of 11% without raising prices.
From reviewing supplier spend to cutting treatment costs by nearly 50% through changes such as switching oils, Newsome has taken a hands-on approach to improving margins. She has also streamlined stock and laundry processes and introduced water-saving initiatives, all while maintaining service standards.
She is also part of the hotel sustainability team, implementing water-saving initiatives and operational efficiencies such as structured laundry schedules, alongside improved locker management and clearer stock control.
Her leadership style is hands-on and supportive. Since taking over as assistant head, Newsome has improved staff retention by 70% through better rotas, regular one-to-ones and clear communication, while mentoring team members into more senior roles.
Newsome also finds the time to work closely with local colleges, delivering talks, judging competitions and promoting spa careers, showing clear progression pathways within the industry and helping attract the next generation of talent.
What does winning an Acorn Award mean to you?
It’s incredibly humbling and genuinely means the world to me. To be recognised by The Caterer among so many talented professionals feels very special. It’s a validation of the passion and commitment it takes to lead teams and deliver high standards.
I’m honoured to attend the ceremony, which feels like a full circle moment given that it’s taking place at the Swinton Estate. I’m proud to have progressed my career here over the last eight years, and so it means even more to me that the celebration is happening right where my career in this industry began.
Who has been your biggest industry champion?
My former general manager, Paul Hunter. He truly believed in me early on and encouraged me to step outside of my comfort zone. Paul trusted me with responsibility before I fully realised I was ready and consistently supported my development. I am extremely lucky to have him as a mentor.
What has been the one best piece of advice that someone has given you?
People will always remember how you made them feel. Whether that’s a guest, a member or a colleague, it’s stuck with me throughout my career. Hospitality is about moments, connection and care, and that advice drives how I lead, communicate and make decisions every day. Standards matter, but empathy and consistency matter even more.
What does hospitality mean to you?
It’s about creating a sense of belonging. It’s the ability to make people feel welcomed, cared for and at ease, whether they’re visiting for the first time or returning regularly. It’s also about teamwork, with everyone playing their part to deliver.
