Andreas Antona made MBE in King's Birthday Honours

Chef and restaurateur Andreas Antona has been made an MBE in the King’s Birthday Honours.

He is one of a handful of hospitality representatives on the list that includes John Grant, chair of J & G who was awarded an OBE for services to the Scotch whisky industry and Isabella Cameron, head of kitchen at Grogarry Lodge on the Isle of Uist, who was recognised with the British Empire Medal (BEM).

Antona, who won the Independent Restaurateur of the Year Catey in 2022, was recognised with an MBE for his dedication to nurturing talent and commitment to culinary excellence. He is co-founder and executive vice president of the British Culinary Federation, and also served as founder and chairman of the Bocuse d’Or UK Academy. He remains passionate about driving interest in the competition.

Antona told The Caterer: “It was a massive surprise but I’m absolutely thrilled. I started cooking in 1974 and this industry has given everything to me. I’d like to thank anyone involved in nominating me. 

“I’ve worked in various chef organisations for the betterment of the industry and raised money for various charities. I like to help people along. That goes for the chefs that have started their careers with me too in the restaurant that me and my wife started 30 years ago. It’s a genuine thrill to be recognised in this manner.”

Isabella Cameron, who has worked at Grogarry Lodge for 55 years, said of her BEM: “I thought it was a scam at first! So, this is a huge surprise to me and there are many others in this community who deserve an award. I’m not sure who to thank since I don’t know who put me forward but I’m grateful for it.

“I’ve worked with some great people over the years, and I’ve always enjoyed cooking and looking after guests in Grogarry Lodge. I look forward to another busy season this year.”

Other recognition for individuals associated with hospitality include MBEs for Maurice Geddis, co-founder and co-chair of Avondale Foods and 10 Downing Street front of house assistant Anne Holland, and a British Empire Medal for Eleanor Keeley, a school cook and catering manager at Linden Lodge School in Wandsworth, London.
