Chestnut Group buys three further pubs with rooms

Chestnut Group has acquired three new pubs with rooms in East Anglia as it continues expansion in the region.

The winner of the Pub and Bar Award at the 2023 Cateys has bought the Red Lion in East Bergholt, the Angel Inn in Stoke-by-Nayland and the Anchor Inn in Nayland (pictured).

Chestnut Group was founded by Philip Turner in 2013 and has grown to 23 pubs with rooms across Norfolk, Suffolk, Essex and Cambridgeshire.

Turner said: “Despite the challenging environment we remain committed to a successful future for hospitality and are thrilled to welcome these charming places into our collection, securing their future for local communities.”

The Angel Inn and the Anchor Inn remain open to the public and will continue to trade as normal while the Red Lion will re-open on 25 August.

Chestnut is also investing in its existing estate and has also opened three new lodge-style bedrooms in the grounds of the Crown Stoke-by-Nayland complete with with freestanding bathtubs, walk-in showers and uninterrupted views of Constable Country.

The group also has a growing drinks arm. It bought East Anglian wine merchant Peter Graham Wines in 2023 after working closely with the business for a decade and also acquired independent specialist Bijou Wine Merchant last year.
