David Steel is to join new B&I catering business Houston & Hawkes as director of food after three and a half years with Bartlett Mitchell.

Steel will leave Bartlett Mitchell, where he is chef director of business development, in the next few weeks. He joins Houston & Hawkes, which was established by senior foodservice directors Simon Houston and Dave Hawkes, pictured below, last year, as it looks to "challenge the status quo" in the B&I sector.

Houston told The Caterer: "We are absolutely thrilled that David is joining Houston & Hawkes as our director of food.

"David is a hugely experienced and respected leader, with a depth of knowledge that is hard to beat.

"His passion for seasonal British cookery, training and concept development will bring innovation and flair to our business, as well as further strengthening our support structure to our on-site teams and clients."

Acorn Award winner Houston, previously sales director of Bartlett Mitchell, and Hawkes, former BaxterStorey regional managing director, launched the business in response to a perceived customer desire to deal with owner-operators. The Caterer understands it has secured at least two B&I contracts in its first year.

A spokesperson for Bartlett Mitchell said: "We wish David every success for the future. This is a really exciting time for both Bartlett Mitchell and the market, and we're taking this opportunity to put new plans in place to further grow and develop our already accomplished culinary team."

Steel had been appointed chef director for business development in May 2019 having worked as development chef for the previous two and a half years.
