Pan-African pop-up to open permanent site at Edinburgh café

Chef Tunde Abifarin (pictured) has announced that his pan-African pop-up concept Farin Road will have a permanent residence at Tani Modi from next month, an independent café in Edinburgh's Hanover Street.

Opening initially Fridays and Saturdays from 5.30pm, Farin Road at Tan Modi is expected to launch on 6 May. The concept began as a series of pop-ups and private events.

Abifarin's menu is rooted in Sub-Saharan Africa while also drawing inspiration from across the African continent, Brazil and the Caribbean, including Caribbean-inspired jerk dishes, kachumbari from Tanzania, agashe from Sudan and chakalaka from South Africa.

There are plans to add takeaway and delivery services in the near future.

Abifarin said: "The vast Scottish larder tells an African tale. Farin Road finds its origin in the abundant Scottish larder, which is readily available to the kitchen. The team have taken a bold leap into the uncharted world of curating the cuisine of the African continent in a new way."

He previously worked at restaurants in Edinburgh including as senior sous chef at Bread Street Kitchen, head chef at the Murrayfield hotel, chef de partie at the Pompadour at the Waldorf Astoria, demi chef de partie at the Balmoral, as well as a head chef role with Restaurant Associates at Deloitte.
