A fire has ripped through the Popinjay hotel in Lanarkshire this morning.

Ten fire crews were sent to the 34-bedroom property after the alarm was raised at 7.18am. Video footage from the scene posted to social media shows flames and breaking through the roof and huge plumes of smoke.

A Scottish Fire and Rescue Service spokesperson said: "We were alerted at 7.18am on Thursday, August 18 to reports of a building on fire at Lanark Road, Rosebank, Lanarkshire.

"Operations control mobilised 10 fire appliances, one height vehicle and specialist resources to a fire affecting a commercial property.

"There are no reported casualties at this time and crews are still in attendance."

In a statement posted to Facebook the hotel added: "Fire incident at Popinjay Hotel this morning, we are able to let everyone know full evacuation of all staff and guests completed quickly without injury to anyone.

"The property is in the hands of Strathclyde Fire and Rescue Service for investigation."

The hotel, leisure club and spa will remain closed at least into the middle of next week.
