Caterer and Hotelkeeper hotels editor joins Springboard Charity trek in Nepal
Janet Harmer, hotel editor of Caterer and Hotelkeeper, is joining a team of intrepid trekkers bound for the Annapurna mountain range in Nepal, on behalf of the Springboard Charity.
Setting off on 1 March 2014, the trip will encompass a five day trek up to a height of 2,500 ft, followed by a volunteering project over three days in a Katmandu school.
It will be the fourth trek undertaken by Springboard, following earlier challenges in the Sahara, China and Peru.
Anne Pierce, chief executive of Springboard, said the treks are "hugely beneficial" for the charity, which helps raise vital funds to help young disadvantaged people to develop the skills and motivation to secure employment in the hospitality industry.
"They are a fantastic way to raise significant funds and make a lasting difference to the lives of those less fortunate than ourselves," she said. "They also challenge our own abilities to cope under testing mental and physical encounters, are thought provoking and widen horizons; as well as being a unique opportunity to develop relationships, cultivate teamwork and friendship in an unforgettable environment.
"Ultimately, we hope that they provide the opportunity for people to better understand the scope and value of the work that the charity does."
Around 20 volunteers so far have signed up for the trek, but there are still spaces available for anyone wishing to undertake what will be a philanthropic challenge, which, as well as supporting young people in UK hospitality, will also deliver a training programme to benefit young people and the local tourism industry in Nepal.
