Conferences can take the green route

Conferences can take the green route

Your informative and inspiring Green October campaign will surely be viewed retrospectively as a tipping point - no longer can the UK hospitality sector claim ignorance, or justify its disinterest, on matters to do with global warming.

Further scope for action concerns those who engage significantly within the £12b-a-year conference industry. For example, among the 100 suggestions on our www.responsiblemeetings.com website are ideas for recycled bags for delegates, eco-friendly giveaways and awards, the use of inspirational speakers on the environment, and the promotion of outdoor training that focuses on conservation pursuits. Also identified are those organisations which offer global leadership for greener meetings.

Bookings made online through our meetings service automatically trigger a donation by us to Climate Care, and we work constantly to encourage our 1,000 venues, as well as our conference buyers, to sponsor travel-related greenhouse gas offsets in order to make their events carbon-neutral.

The more this industry can be seen to encourage sustainability, the less likely will momentum grow in favour of electronic, or virtual, meetings.

Thanks again for a brilliant environmental initiative.
