DuPont Teflon in hunt for more judges as registration for Diamond Standard Awards opens
The organisers of a new awards scheme designed to recognise excellence among the chefs, home economists and food technologists of the future is on the hunt for more hospitality industry professionals to act as judges.
The Teflon Diamond Standard Awards, launched by DuPont Consumer Finishes, manufacturer of the well-known non-stick coating, will award students and teachers on the regional finalists teams, as well as the national winning team, with prize money and trophies.
In addition to the title, winning schools will receive a treasure trove of supplies, including cookware and bakeware coated with top-grade DuPont Teflon non-stick coating systems for their teaching kitchens, donated by sponsors Tesco, Europasonic, Crealys, NoStik, Le Chef and Imperial.
Registration and entry to the awards are online at www.teflon-dsa.com and are open to teams of two 16- to 20-year-olds studying full-time food technology or a related discipline at school or college in England, Wales or Scotland. Students who have participated in FutureChef and are now in the older age category are expected to be among the participants.
DuPont has assembled a panel of industry experts to judge the awards nationally and regionally. Celebrity chef Lesley Waters (pictured) heads the national judging panel, which also includes Mark Lewis, group editor of Caterer and Hotelkeeper, and Anne Pierce, chief executive of Springboard UK.
There is now an opportunity for additional judges to bring their expertise and experience to the judging panel. Lesley Waters said: "We are looking for a high-quality mix of participants on our judging panels to make them as representative as possible of the catering sector as whole. So I would be delighted to hear from any chefs, restaurant owners, hoteliers, food technology teachers or other industry professionals who might be interested in joining our national or regional panels and helping the industry as a whole take ownership of this exciting new award scheme."
The Diamond Standard Awards are to be judged in six regions, which are: London & South-east, South-west, Midlands, Wales, North and Scotland. Regional and national judging will take place during March 2013, and all judges will be featured on the Diamond Standard Awards website.
