The prime minister was called "dithering Dave" right up until he announced his wholehearted backing for his deal to keep Britain in the European Union (EU). Boris Johnson was similarly self-confessedly "veering like a shopping trolley" before deciding to throw in his lot with the ‘out' campaign.
