Jill Stein wins lifetime achievement trophy at Women 1st's Shine Awards

The industry's most influential women were celebrated last night at the Shine Awards, which recognise women's achievements in the travel, tourism and hospitality sectors.

Jill Stein, director of the Seafood Restaurant in Padstow, Cornwall, was honoured with the lifetime achievement award at a ceremony held at London's Jumeirah Carlton Tower Hotel in Knightsbridge.

Stein opened the restaurant with her business partner and now ex-husband, Rick Stein, in 1975 and together they created a flourishing empire comprising six restaurants, a pub, cookery school, 40 bedrooms, four shops and mail order department. While her ex-husband's name is known worldwide, the award recognised the hard work that Stein put in behind the scenes to drive the company from the beginning.

Meanwhile, Emily Perry, marketing manager at hospitality training firm Learnpurple, won the rising star award. Since joining the business in January 2011, Perry has been credited with the transformation of the organisation, helping to deliver £75,000 of new business.

Businesses recognised for their involvement of women were HTP Training, which won the small business award, and Merseytravel, which was handed the large business award.

The event also saw 16 new inductees into the Women 1st Top 100 Club of the most influential women in the industry.

Sharon Glancy, founder of Women 1st, said the quality of this year's nominations was remarkable, adding: "Our winners, and the extraordinary women in our Top 100 Club, are a critical force which will play no small role in ensuring the future success of the industry."

Women 1st is the brainchild of People 1st, the Sector Skills Council for hospitality, leisure, passenger transport, travel and tourism. Since its inception in 2009, Women 1st has supported more than 800 women through dedicated training, mentoring and thought leadership programmes.
