LACA Awards for Excellence 2014 winners announced

The winners of the LACA (the Lead Association for CAtering in Education) Awards for Excellence 2014 have been announced.

The 12 awards seek to recognise the education foodservice industry's most committed, innovative and successful schools and individuals across the UK.

Among the school winners were the Manchester Health Academy, Manchester City Council (Secondary School Catering Team of the Year); the Oldham Academy (Self Delivered Secondary School Award) and Turton and Edgeworth School, Bolton (Self Delivered Primary School Award).

Foodservice specialist Taylor Shaw won the Change For Life prize, in honour of its commitment to the healthier living campaign's main tenets; London Borough of Tower Hamlets Contract Services went home with the Catering Business of the Year, while Premier Foods and Unilever Food Solutions jointly picked up the Outstanding Supplier of the Year Award.

The Nan Berger Memorial Award for innovation went to Plymouth Education Catering, while the prestigious accolade of the Roger Davis Outstanding Achievement Award 2014 went to Sandra Weigel of Carmarthenshire County Council.

Meanwhile, ISS Facility Services - Education won the Catering Marketing Award, which was the first ever award to be given out by LACA, when its awards began over twenty years ago.

The Chair's Award, which was presented by current chair Carrieanne Bishop and immediate past chair, Anne Bull, went to Nigel Argyle of Elygra Marketing Services, who was thanked for his support and described by Bull as "always going above and beyond what he is asked".

The awards ceremony took place on the evening of 10 July at the Hilton Birmingham Metropole, as part of the association's annual Main Event conference.

The prize-giving event also honoured the LACA School Chef of the Year 2014, Tanya Watkin, while an auction for sponsor-donated prizes, plus funds from a 5k event, managed to raise over £9,000 for charity Black Country food bank.

Event sponsors included Bidvest 3663, Premier Foods, Hobart, PastaKing and UrbanEat.
