New gin distillery and bar to open in Gatwick airport

A new gin bar with its own distillery by the Restaurant Group's TRG Concessions has opened at London's Gatwick airport, offering drinks to passengers, and bottles available on their return journey.

Named after the 17th-century botanist, Nicholas Culpeper, the Nicholas Culpeper London Dry Gin bar is operated in Gatwick's North Terminal landside. It operates an open distillery just three metres by four metres wide, and produces a gin made with lemongrass, Chinese cassia bark, cardamom and Angelica root, by "master of gin" Matt Servini.

It will aim to produce gin in batches of 12 litres, at a cost of £3.95 for a single and £5.95 for a double. A bottle of 700ml is available for £25, however, customers are not able to take it on the plane with them, and must instead order it to pick up from the airport on their return.

In a statement, the Restaurant Group managing director Nick Ayerst said: ‘We never really believed that it would be possible to distill gin in an airport. The teamwork and tenacity to create and deliver The Nicholas Culpeper has been unlike anything I've ever known before."

TRG Concessions also operates a host of other dining and drinking venues at Gatwick airport, including Apostophe, Comptoir Libanais, EAT, Giraffe, and Wondertree.
