Pelican wins three-year deal to manage Birmingham City Council food supply contract
Procurement specialist Pelican Buying Group has won a three-year deal to manage a £42m food supply contract for the UK's largest local authority, Birmingham City Council.
Pelican is responsible for tendering and managing supply chain contracts for food and drink, catering disposables and light catering equipment for all directorates of BCC, including schools, elderly people's homes, leisure centres and civic and hospitality catering.
Three staff from Pelican will be based full-time at Birmingham City Council's office, supported by Pelican's head office in Surrey.
Shabaz Mohammed, managing director, Pelican Buying Group, said: "We are very excited to have been awarded the contract to manage Birmingham City Council's food and food-related purchasing."
A large proportion of the contract concentrates on the purchasing for over 400 schools, which includes sourcing products that not only meet the Government's nutritional standards, but also adhere to the council's sustainable and Fairtrade food procurement policies. Pelican has employed a nutritionist to provide technical expertise and support in product sourcing and nutrition product analysis.
