RSPCA seeks pub, restaurant and caterer entrants for its 2010 Good Business Awards

The RSPCA is calling for pubs, restaurants and caterers across the UK to enter the 2010 Good Business Awards, which recognise ethical business approaches to animal welfare.

The award recognise hospitality business that have set out to source their meat, fish and dairy from providers that maintain high animal welfare standards, including living conditions, transport, slaughter methods, labelling and farm inspection.

David Bowles, RSPCA head of external affairs, said: "Whilst the desire for ethical cuisine remained strong during the recession, with the economy hopefully on the road to recovery, we hope that consumer demand for cruelty-free dining will only grow.

"We look to encourage those in the restaurant, pub and catering sectors to enter the RSPCA Good Business Awards in a step towards introducing or improving policies on animal welfare, and to tell their customers about them."

Last year's winners were Restaurant Alimentum, Cambridge, which won best independent restaurant; the Feathers Inn, Northumberland for innovation in the field of animal welfare; and McDonald's in the restaurant chain category, which was recognised for its improved animal welfare policies.

Richard Johnson, TV journalist and presenter and one of the award judges, said: "Customers want to feel assured that the restaurants and pubs that they eat in are using suppliers who rear their animals humanely. Restaurants and pubs that are doing this, or seeking to, deserve our support and recognition. This year, we hope to see more entries than ever before."

Entrants this year will be judged on the basis of their practices in the following areas:

  • Welfare of beef, dairy cattle, poultry bred for meat, laying hens, pigs, sheep and farmed fish
  • Live transport of animals
  • Slaughter methods
  • Policies to ensure the establishment does not sell foie gras or white veal
  • Labelling
  • Import of meat and eggs from other countries
  • Farm inspection
  • Policies to phase out the use of whole cage eggs and cage eggs as ingredients by 2012
