Smoking ban: What the workers think
Caterer sent roving reporter Jen Crothers to ask bar workers in Sutton, Surrey, how they feel about the smoking ban.
Jelena Boitsova, Bar Room Bar "I think it's a good thing. It's often hard to breathe when customers are smoking in the bar. I'm quite healthy apart from the passive smoking at work, so I'm looking forward to the smoking ban coming into effect."
Frankie Hobbs, All Bar One "I support the ban. However, in here it's fine, as there don't seem to be many smokers. I don't tend to notice the effects of smoking as much as I would if this was a really big and crowded pub. The last thing you want when you go to a bar to chill out is a smoky atmosphere."
Phil Smith, O'Neill's "It's brilliant. I won't have to clean any more ashtrays. I'm a smoker myself, but working in a smoky bar is completely different to just having one cigarette in your house. The smoke in here always does my eyes in. When the ban comes in, it'll just be my own smoke I'm dealing with."
Sally Pomfrey, the Cock and Bull "I'm 100% for it despite being a smoker, and most of the staff here smoke too. Healthwise, there'll obviously be benefits, as smokers won't be polluting everyone else's atmosphere, just their own. The ventilation here is quite good, but obviously it's not as good as a total ban on smoking. It could encourage more non-smokers into pubs."
Pina Culetta, Il Ponte "It's a great thing for everyone involved in the catering industry. It's great for non-smoking staff and customers. Even if you have only one customer smoking, you always notice it. But I've noticed that many smokers already go outside for a cigarette during a meal, which is considerate. I'm looking forward to my clothes not smelling of smoke when I get in from work."
