Squad UK hospitality team announced for WorldSkills 2013
The National Apprenticeship Service has announced five young "skills stars" from the hospitality industry who have earned a place in Squad UK for an international skills competition - WorldSkills Leipzig 2013.
The Squad UK members in the cooking category are: Louise May Matthews, commis chef at Eton College, age 21, from Eton, Berkshire; Danny Hoang, commis chef at L'Autre Pied who attends Westminster Kingsway College, age 18, from London; and Andre Rhone, commis chef at the Royal Garden hotel, age 18, from Northolt, Middlesex.
In the confectioner and pastry chef category the contenders are: Anabelle Wilson, who attends University of West London and is employed by Bachmann's Pâtisserie, age 18, from Hampton, Middlesex; and Stephen Smith, who attends Westminster Kingsway College, age 17, from Harpenden in Hertfordshire.
The next year will be spent preparing to take on the very best from across the world, undergoing a specialised training programme supported by a dedicated training manager for each skill - Yolande Stanley for the confectioner and pastry cook category and Michael Godfrey for the cooking category.
Annabelle Wilson said: "It's a huge honour to have been selected as a member of Squad UK. I hope this opportunity will allow me to showcase how apprenticeships and skills can lead to successful employment and career opportunities. I know the next year will be tough as I will be in training but I really hope the whole of the country gets behind Squad and Team UK for WorldSkills Leipzig 2013 like they do our sporting teams!"
WorldSkills is the biggest international skills competition in the world. Held every two years in one of its 61 member countries/regions, the competition sees about 1,000 young people aged 18 to 23 from across the world come together to compete for medals in more than 40 different skills including electrical installation, welding, web design, cooking and landscape gardening.
Members of Squad UK will compete for a coveted place in Team UK at another selection event which will be held in March 2013. Individuals selected will then carry on training intensively with Team UK before heading to WorldSkills Leipzig, which takes place from 2 to 7 July 2013.
