Stephen Carter - Career guide

Since graduating from the University of Surrey, his 35-year career has taken him to most major cities and resort areas in Scotland from Aberdeen, Glasgow and Edinburgh to Speyside, the East Neuk of Fife and currently the Cameron House resort on Loch Lomond.

He has mentored several industry leaders including Robert Cook of De Vere Hotels & De Vere Village Urban Resorts (who, of course, was previously at Malmaison and Hotel du Vin), and Douglas Waddell of Handpicked Hotels.

He has gained several prestigious awards, not least The Silver Thistle Award by VisitScotland for outstanding contribution to Scottish Tourism and the Manager of the Year Catey in 2005. In 2007, he was made an OBE for services to the Hospitality Industry and in 2011 Carter was named Caterer and Hotelkeeper's Hotelier of the Year.

He is chairman of The Hospitality Industry Trust Scotland, assisting people to achieve their potential within the Scottish Hospitality Industry. He is also a founding director of the International Leadership School which promotes higher degrees in tourism and hospitality sector.

Stephen Carter - What we think

A major and longstanding player in the Scottish hospitality industry, Carter's current role at Cameron House has seen the property pick up many awards including the 2012 Best UK Hotel Spa in the SPA Traveller Awards. He has also been responsible for overseeing one of its latest projects - an expanded conference offering of two new rooms - ensuring that the Catey Hotel of the Year - Group 2010 winner will maintain its foothold in the business and leisure markets.

With an eye on the future, Carter will no doubt continue working in international marketing, with partners such as VisitScotland, to propel Cameron House into new markets.

This will set us up for the 2014 focus on Scotland, with the year of the homecoming, Ryder Cup, and the Commonwealth Games. We look forward to an ever successful and growing industry in Scotland," he told Caterer.
