German Doner Kebab opens first roadside Cambridge restaurant

Fast casual kebab brand German Doner Kebab (GDK) is opening its first site at Cambridge Services today.

The opening marks the brand’s third roadside site with motorway service station provider Extra MSA, having launched restaurants at Baldock in Hertfordshire in 2023 and Peterborough in February of this year.

Simon Wallis, chief executive of GDK, said: “As a prime stopover point for travellers along the M11, Cambridge Services is a key location to reach a range of customers seeking a quick and tasty meal whilst they’re on the move. We’re eager to become a favourite stop for those journeying through the area.

He said the opening took the brand "closer to our 150th site opening which we’re very excited about”.

The Cambridge site will serve breakfast including a doner egg brioche and a breakfast wrap, alongside GDK’s main menu.

This latest opening comes as GDK looks to grow its presence in travel hubs and service station locations.

In an interview with The Caterer this month, Wallis said that of the 25 new sites to open this year, there was larger number of "non-traditional" format restaurants.

He said the presence of a “halal operation” in travel hubs and service stations would allow GDK to “give customers an offering that wasn’t there before” and help franchise partners boost sales.

GDK also opened a restaurant in London’s Victoria in January this year.
