£1b Liverpool One complex opens officially today

European Capital of Culture Liverpool today saw the official opening of its £1b leisure complex, Liverpool One.

Hundreds of people gathered to watch the Princess Royal and Duke of Westminster open the second phase of Europe's biggest retail project.

The 42-acre residential and retail development located in the city's Chavasse Park is home to more than 20 restaurants and bars including Loch Fyne, Las Iguanas, Wagamama and Café Rouge, as well as Hilton and Novotel hotels.

The scheme also includes more than 600 residential apartments, office space, a cinema and more than 150,000 sq m of retail space across a total of 36 new buildings.

Liverpool One chief executive Joanne Jennings said: "It is wonderful to be able to give the people of Liverpool full access to areas of their city centre which have been under construction for so long.

"Liverpool One is the largest development of its type in Europe and is a landmark in the revitalisation of this proud city."
