All companies should fear an enemy within

Congratulations on your feature on fraud in the industry ("Putting a stop to fraud by employees", 15 June, page 60). At last someone has tackled a subject other trade publications shy away from and pretend does not happen.

I have been an internal auditor in the leisure and hospitality industry for more than 30 years and find fraud today just as prevalent as when I first started. The problem is that senior management refuses to accept that it could be happening in their company.

I provide a freelance internal audit service to the industry and my clients are amazed at how vulnerable they are when I undertake financial risk reviews. Call me a cynic, but I believe every company has dishonest staff prepared to take advantage of loose controls.
