Aurora Hotel Collection to open Hotel Colessio in Stirling

Following lengthy delays, the 40-bedroom Hotel Colessio in Stirling from the Aurora Hotel Collection will finally open in July.

The luxury property on the site of the former Stirling Royal Infirmary has cost £10m, twice its original budget. It is expected to become Stirling's first five-AA-star hotel.

Steven McLeod, chief executive of the Aurora Hotel Collection, admitted that the development of the four-year long project had been fraught with problems.

"This has been one of the most challenging projects I have ever worked, from difficulties with some of the contractors to unforeseen problems during building and construction, all of which was out of my control," he said. "Ideally I would have wanted to open Colessio before now, but I simply would not open the doors until I felt everything was perfect.

"There have been moments over the past few years where I have felt like walking away from the project, but I am very determined and I could also see the potential for Stirling in having a five-star hotel in the centre of the city. As difficult as this has been, it will be all the more satisfying to see Colessio welcoming guests."

McLeod said that for the city there will be "nothing else like the hotel", which will be ideally placed to take advantage of the influx of visitors to the city for the homecoming celebrations, as well as sports enthusiasts heading to the Commonwealth Games and Ryder Cup.

"The building is a landmark in Stirling and we've been sympathetic in the restoration of its exterior, but when people walk through the door they're going to see a daring re-invention of this grand Victorian property, with a dramatic palette of black and white providing a striking backdrop for object d'art and designer touches."

McLeod has overseen the interior design of the hotel with furnishings by Andrew Martin and bathrooms from Phillpe Starck.

The hotel will feature the Grill bar and restaurant and an events suite for up to 300 guests.

Hotel Colessio will be the latest addition to the Aurora Hotel Collection which was founded by McLeod in 2005 and today comprises Airth Castle Hotel & Spa, Airth; Glenbervie & the Coach House, near Larbert; Solsgirth House by Dollar; the Kenmore Hotel & Luxury Lodges on the banks of the River Tay; and the Cairn Lodge and Hotel, Auchterarder.
