Britannia scoops up two Scarborough hotels out of administration

Britannia Hotels has bought two Scarborough properties out of administration for an undisclosed price, in what is one of the largest hotel transactions ion the North of England in recent years.

The three-star, 118-bedroom Royal hotel above South Bay and the two-star, 70-bedroom Clifton hotel overlooking North Bay were previously owned by English Rose Hotels Scarborough. Administrators Duff and Phelps put the hotels on the market through property agent Colliers International in August 2011, with respective price tags of £7.5m to £8m, and £2m to £2.25m.

The acquisition of the two hotels increases the portfolio of Britannia Hotels, operated by Alex Langsam, to 39, making it one of the largest privately owned hotel groups in the UK. Britannia now has a stronghold of hotel rooms in Scarborough as it already owns the town's 382-bedroom Grand hotel.

A spokesman for Colliers International said that Britannia had been selected as the preferred bidder from several formal offers owing to the group's interest in acquiring both hotels.
