Call for entries for Gold Service Scholarship 2017
Entries are now being invited for next year' Gold Service Scholarship, set up five years ago to highlight front-of-house as a serious career path.
The winner of the award will follow in the footsteps of Jennifer Santner, restaurant manager at Fenchurch restaurant at Sky Garden, London, who last year was presented with the accolade by The Queen, the patron of the Gold Service Scholarship.
Previous recipients of the scholarships include Rebecca Dibben, who was the inaugural winner in 2013, James Fleming (2014) and Daniele Quattromini (2015).
The winner of the 2017 scholarship will have the opportunity to undertake a variety of training placements, including a state banquet at Buckingham Palace, a five-day stage at the Waterside Inn or Le Gavroche, and a one week work stint at a Mandarin Oriental hotel.
Alastair Storey, chairman of BaxterStorey and chairman of the Gold Service Scholarship, said the scholarship's principal aim is to highlight and recognise the importance of quality in service in the hospitality industry. "It is vital that we nurture young talent to be future leaders and to recognise early in their careers the spark of personality, aptitude and ambition to succeed in this dynamic business."
Following the closing date for entries on 7 October, selected candidates will be invited to take part in the quarter-finals at the Hotel Café Royal, London, on 7 November. Semi-finals will follow two weeks later at Rosewood London on 28 November.
Candidates who make it to the finals will be judged on 6 February 2017 at the Connaught, London, with the awards ceremony taking place at Claridge's hotel, London, on 28 February 2017.
Santner said her success in the Gold Service Scholarship has already helped to open doors for her. "This whole experience has helped, and is helping, me to understand the hospitality industry on another level," she explained. "I've had access to some of the legends of the industry, and been able to learn from them."
