Choice Hotels to grow to 50 hotels by end of 2013

The expansion of Choice Hotels continues apace with the announcement that two new-build properties will join the franchise group over the next few weeks.

The two new hotels follow the recent addition to Choice of the 81-bedroom Winchester Royal, which has joined the four-star Clarion Collection brand.

Choice Hotels, which started the year with 37 properties, expect to have a portfolio of around 50 hotels by the end of 2013. The major part of its growth has been due to a franchise agreement it signed in January with hotel owner Akkeron to operate nine hotels. A further three to four hotels - including the Richmond Gate - owned by Akkeron are expected to join Choice Hotels by the end of the year.

Speaking from the company's annual conference in Dublin, Duncan Berry, UK chief executive of Choice Hotels Europe, said that the growth of the group is an indication of hotel owners recognising the benefits of belong to one of its three cost effective brands - Comfort (two-to-three star), Quality or Clarion Collection.

"We're offering a number of new initiatives, such as the ability for owners to create and manage their own websites with direct booking capabilities powered by Buuteeq which we have announced today," he said.

"Our global sales effort, with the strong two way relationship we have with owners, is also a strong factor in driving our growth."
