Chris and Jeff Galvin win Special Award at Craft Guild of Chefs Awards

Michelin-starred chef-restaurateurs Chris and Jeff Galvin were honoured with the Special Award at the Craft Guild of Chefs Awards this evening in recognition of their market-leading restaurants, their significant work in training and education and their broader, outstanding contribution to the hospitality industry.

Respected throughout the industry as great chef-educators, the brothers have worked with each other off and on for the past 20 years.

They joined forces permanently in 2005 when they launched Galvin Bistrot de Luxe in London's Marylebone, and it was steadily followed by the openings of Galvin at Windows on the 28th Floor of the Hilton on Park Lane, Galvin La Chapelle and the recently repurposed Galvin HOP (formerly Café a Vin) in Spitalfields, Galvin Demoiselle in Harrods, and Galvin Brasserie de Luxe and the Pompadour by Galvin at the Waldorf Astoria Edinburgh - The Caledonian in Edinburgh.

In February, Chris and Jeff announced plans to take over the food and beverage operation of the five-AA-red-star Athenaeum Hotel and Residences in Mayfair, which reopens at the end of this month. The menu is expected to feature classic British dishes as well as incorporating well known Galvin favourites such as the Galvin smoked salmon and steak tartare with toasted sourdough.

The brothers are due to launch two new restaurants in Dubai shortly.

Commenting on the partnership at the Athenaeum, Chris Galvin said: "This is a first for Jeff and I and we have really enjoyed the challenge of coming up with the whole food and beverage offering. We are committed to our staff, giving them the opportunity to progress, and as such we have appointed many of the current Galvin team to take the lead at the Athenaeum to give guests and diners the best possible experience."

David Mulcahy, the awards organiser and vice-president of the Craft Guild of Chefs, and craft and food development director at Sodexo, said: "Chris and Jeff Galvin are amazing chefs who are doing phenomenally well in growing their business and supporting the industry. We're proud to recognise a true family business."

Other high-profile winners from the awards included 2009 Acorn Award winner Will Holland of Coast Restaurant in Saundersfoot in Pembrokeshire, who scooped the Restaurant Chef Award, and 2013 Catey Award winner James Mackenzie of the Pipe and Glass Inn in Beverley, Yorkshire, who walked off with the Pub Restaurant Chef Award.

The Punch Bowl Inn & Restaurant Crosthwaite's Arthur Quin was named Young Chef. The Punch Bowl was named Cumbria Dining Pub of the Year in the Good Pub Guide for 2015 and 2016.

The glittering, black-tie event was held at the Lancaster London and was attended by 780 chefs and industry observers.

"This year's awards truly demonstrate the breadth of talent which exists across all sectors of the catering and hospitality industry," added Mulcahy. "The event is now in its 23rd year and it's exciting to see it going from strength to strength. Our shortlist and winners demonstrate the fantastic talent coming through."
