City Inn goes automatic

City Inn Westminster is introducing airline-style automated check-in terminals as an alternative to checking in at reception.

Customers will be able to check in by typing a reservation or credit card number into the machine, checking their details and even receiving their room key from the terminal.

On leaving customers will insert their key into the machine, check their bill and pay.

City Inn said that with automated terminals now common at airports and railway stations customers were comfortable using them.

A City Inn spokeswoman said: "This is a trial, but we do believe they will be very popular and if this is the case we will give very real consideration to installing them in our other properties in Bristol, Birmingham, Glasgow and Manchester (due to open in 2007)."

City Inn said it was aware there were fears customer service could be compromised by the new technology, but said the addition of the terminals was about customer choice.
