Carl Leaver, chief executive at hotel and fitness club group De Vere, pocketed £633,000 in total payments in the year to 26 September 2004. The 37-year-old, who was formerly managing director of Whitbread's budget Travel Inn chain, joined the De Vere Group in September 2003 to replace retiring chief executive Paul Dermody. Leaver's basic salary of £290,000 was topped up by a £134,000 bonus and other benefits of £209,000.
