Ellington hotel general manager Gerhard Schaller dies

The former general manager of the Ellington hotel in Leeds, which recently entered administration, has died.

Gerhard Schaller had just accepted a new job in Barbados following the closure of the Ellington when he suffered a heart attack and died.

Schaller was a well known hotelier, having held a number of key positions in the 1970s and 1980s at the Savoy, Grosvenor House and the Sheraton Park Tower.

In the 1990s, he was the general manager of London's Montcalm hotel before moving to Mexico and then New Delhi for a new hotel opening.

He returned to the UK and the Balmoral in Edinburgh before becoming general manager at the Five Lakes Resort in Essex.

He joined Pantin Hotels in summer 2008, in preparation for the opening of the Ellington hotel, Leeds.

A memorial celebration will be held on 2 May at 3pm at Five Lakes Hotel, Colchester Road, Tolleshunt Knights, Maldon, Essex CM9 8HX (Tel.01621 868 888).

Donations in Schaller's memory can be made to Leukemia Research.
