Eric Zwiebel to represent the UK in the Best Sommelier of the World competition

Eric Zwiebel, head sommelier at the Summer Lodge in Dorset, is preparing to take on the finest in the world in Argentina tomorrow (Saturday) at the Best Sommelier in the World 2016 competition.

Zwiebel won the Moët UK Sommelier of the Year title in 2004 and, having competed against other recent winners to represent the UK, he will take on the world's best in Mendoza.

He was selected by the Academy of Food & Wine Service (AFWS) in a contest that included Clement Robert from 28-50 (Moët UK Sommelier of the Year 2013) and Tanguy Martin of La Trompette (Moët UK Sommelier of the Year 2015).

Zwiebel competed in the 2007 competition in Rhodes, where he came equal second, and came fourth in Tokyo in 2013.

In between the competition was won by UK sommelier and hotelier Gérard Basset in Chile in 2010.

This year Zwiebel will be joined by three other UK-based sommeliers, who will be competing for their home nations. They are:

  • Gareth Ferreira, assistant head sommelier, 67 Pall Mall (South Africa)
  • Piotr Pietras, head sommelier, Launceston Place (Poland)
  • Serdar Balkaya, head sommelier, the Royal Automobile Club (Turkey)
