Exciting Ryder Cup boosts bookings for Celtic Manor
The global television audience, which watched Europe win the Ryder Cup in one of the closest-fought tournaments in years, has helped create a flood of bookings for the Celtic Manor Resort in Newport.
A total of 384 phone calls making bookings for golf and hotel reservations were taken during the closing ceremony on Monday. Website hits on Friday - the opening day of the tournament - reached 30,000, which is 54% up on the same day last year.
Despite the challenging conditions on Friday when rain almost wiped out the day's play, resulting in the tournament being extended to an unprecedented fourth day, the event was deemed by the resort's marketing manager, Gareth Rees Jones, to be a total success.
"Even though we have been tracking the weather in October for the past few years, no one could have expected it could be as severe as it was, " he said. "However, we had well rehearsed contingency plans in place which enabled us to accommodate the golfers and all the spectators for another day. And we have delighted to have been told that this year's Ryder Cup has been declared as the best ever."
