Eyck Zimmer to leave Manchester's Lowry for Portugal

Eyck Zimmer, the current holder of the Knorr National Chef of the Year title, is leaving his role at Rocco Forte's Lowry hotel in Manchester to take up a position in Portugal.

Zimmer joins the Four Seasons Hotel Ritz Lisbon at the end of June and will be taking on the role of executive head chef, overseeing a brigade of 40 chefs.

His remit at the 282-bedroomed hotel, which stands on one of Lisbon's seven hills, will include a 70-seat restaurant, banqueting for up to 500 people, bar food and room service.

Having previously worked in Portugal before, at the Choupana Hills Resort and Spa in Madeira, where he worked for a year, Zimmer said he was looking forward to returning to the country and, in particular, its capital. "It's a nice capital city and it's going to be a good challenge for me.

"I've had three really good years at the Lowry and Manchester has been a good city to me. I would be lying if I didn't say it wasn't a tough market to operate in, but while at the Lowry I've won National Chef of the Year, Manchester Chef of the Year, Best Chef Mentor in the recent Northern Hospitality Awards."

Next week, Zimmer is also being given an award for his contribution to training from Trafford College.
