Located within three Grade-II-listed Georgian building, which once housed the United Hospital, the 99-bedroom hotel is being developed by Malaysian-based YTL Hotels. It will become the company's first UK hotel and will sit alongside the likes of the Majestic Hotel Kualar Lumpur within its Classic collection of properties.
The lower levels of the hotel - over two floors - will be home to the 1,300sq m Spa Village Bath, which will have will have direct access to the city's celebrated waters through three therapeutic pools. Designed with the Roman history of Bath in mind and reflecting the Malaysian roots of YTL, the pools will be set within an atrium flooded with natural light.
The interior design of the Gainsborough Bath Spa is being undertaken by Champalimaud Design, which has previously been responsible for the London's Dorchester hotel and the Carlyle in New York.
Details of the hotel's restaurant are still to be refined, but it is expected to feature an English menu, with subtle influences from Asia.
