Giving service without profit

I was sorry to learn of the possible demise of the Les Routiers in Britain guidebook as reported last week (Caterer, 19 October, page 7](http://www.caterersearch.com/Articles/2006/10/20/309575/Is+this+the+end+for+Les+Routiers+in+Britain.htm)), so closely following Distinguished Hotels and the RAC guides.

It serves to remind us that making money out of guides and consortia, as with hotels and restaurants themselves, isn't as easy as it looks.

Perhaps the answer is not to even try? Pride of Britain Hotels has existed for 25 years without making any profit whatsoever, and hopes to be around for another 25, so long as we can give a useful service to our members, who own the consortium.

Chief executive, Pride of Britain Hotels
