Hotels and restaurants raised half a million for StreetSmart in 2014

Some 580 hotels and restaurants raised £551,000 in 2014 for homeless charity StreetSmart.

The funds mean that StreetSmart has now raised £7.4m since it began working with hospitality businesses to add £1 to each table's bill.

Venues that have supported the charity include Grain Store, Murano by Angela Hartnett, Dinner by Heston Blumenthal, Terre a Terre in Brighton and the Kitchin in Edinburgh.

Meanwhile, hotels across the country have contributed through the SleepSmart campaign, which works in a similar way with £1 donated on each participating hotel's bill.

The campaign is also supported by Deutsche Bank, which covers all costs to ensure all of each £1 collected goes to charity.

Half of the funds raised support youth-focused projects aiming to end homelessness before it begins, such as Deutsche Bank's youth engagement programme, Born to Be. The remainder addresses emergency needs for rough sleepers and the root causes of homelessness.

Lareena Hilton, global head of brand communications and corporate citizenship at Deutsche Bank, said: "Deutsche Bank has supported StreetSmart since 2006 to ensure that every penny donated through the campaign goes straight to helping the homeless. It is fantastic to see the amount raised to date, knowing that it supports some of the most vulnerable people in our communities."
