Luxury transformation planned for Llangollen's Royal hotel

Llangollen locals Matt and Vicky Jones have acquired the town's Royal hotel with the intention of transforming it into a luxury hotel.

The pair, in partnership with local business partner Tom Bellis, plan to fully renovate and upgrade the Denbighshire hotel and develop a fine-dining restaurant and luxury spa within it to make it a "destination venue".

The Jones' already own the town's Three Eagles restaurant and nearby wedding venue, Tyn Dwr Hall. Executive chef of the Three Eagles, Adam Gaunt-Evans, will oversee the hotel's fine-dining restaurant.

The Royal will continue to operate for the coming months before closing to allow the renovation works to take place, with a grand reopening planned for 2020.

Matt said: "When we opened the Three Eagles on Bridge Street, we wanted to really up the stakes for what's on offer in Llangollen's social and dining scene. With the Royal hotel, we aim to carry that ‘luxury' element into the town's accommodation offerings and have some really special plans in line for the Royal."

Bellis added: "The Royal is historically such a major part of the Llangollen townscape that I'm sure there'll be plenty of local interest. We are very much aiming to create a venue that Llangollen can be proud of as well as one which will act as a real boost to the town's overall image."
