New four-star hotel to be built near Carmarthen
Plans have been announced for a new 100-bedroom, four-star hotel to be built on the outskirts of Carmarthen.
It will be developed on a 7.5-acre site at Parc Pensarn. The Welsh Assembly Government is selling the site to Gryphon Leisure, whose directors, Angela Saunders and her brother Barry, own and run the four-star Stradey Park hotel in Llanelli.
Subject to planning permission, the new Pensarn Park hotel will provide a £12m investment in the local economy and create around 120 jobs.
The hotel will be developed in two phases, with the first 60 bedrooms opening in 2013 and the additional 40 being completed the following year.
It will include a function suite for 450, which will be the largest in the area, and a health spa.
Ieuan Wyn Jones, minister for the economy and transport, said he was pleased the sale of the site would support the expansion plans of a well known local business.
"It is always encouraging to hear of businesses planning for growth, particularly when there is the potential to create local jobs and new business opportunities for local companies," he said.
Angela Saunders said the new hotel, which will have extensive views over a valley, excellent road and rail links and good access, will play a key role in attracting new visitors to the area.
"The site is ideally located on the tourist route between England and West Wales and well placed to appeal to a new market," she said.
David Own and Partners of Cardiff are developing the architectural plans for the Pensarn Park hotel.
