New multimillion-pound Sunderland hotel in pipeline

A £10m hotel and office development is planned for the riverside area of Sunderland.

Newcastle-based developer Adderstone Group hopes the project will help regenerate the run-down part of the city.

The proposal, which is at the planning stage, is for a 125-bedroom hotel and 16 two-storey office blocks.

The 10-storey hotel, which has already had interest from three major operators, will sit on a one acre site. A budget for the hotel has not yet been finalised.

A spokesman for Adderstone Group said: "It's too early too tell yet whether it will be a four-star or budget venue but I think Sunderland deserves a big trendy hotel."

A planning decision is expected in the next few weeks.
