Schrager and Meyer reveal more about planned New York restaurant
Ian Schrager and Danny Meyer's Union Square Hospitality Group has revealed details of its upcoming Italian restaurant, which opens in November at the landmark Gramercy Park hotel in New York.
The restaurant will be called "Maialino", after Meyer worked in Rome as a tour guide where he'd unfailingly order "Maialino" (roast suckling pig) for dinner.
The Roman trattoria will overlook Gramercy Park from the first floor of the hotel and will be headed up by executive chef Nick Anderer, former executive sous chef at Gramercy Tavern. The general manager will be Terry Coughlin, formerly the general manager at Tabla.
In April this year, Schrager teamed up with restaurateur Danny Meyer and his Union Square Hospitality Group (USHG) to create the new restaurant, as well as operate all of the food and beverage concepts including the hotel's Roof and Garden restaurant (to be reconceived in 2010), banquets, private events, and room service.
Meyer said: "I've dreamed of opening a trattoria ever since I lived in Rome, and have been waiting for just the right time and place. To have the opportunity to do this in one of New York's most highly regarded hotels and remarkable neighbourhoods is incredibly exciting.
Schrager added: "I am elated to have Danny Meyer create a signature restaurant at the Gramercy Park Hotel. I consider him one of the best restaurateurs in the world and have always wanted to do a project with him. I originally approached Danny about operating the restaurant when we reopened the hotel in 2005, but he was focused at the time on opening up The Modern. He is that devoted to quality.
"I consider this project a once in a lifetime opportunity and a perfect addition for the Gramercy Park Hotel, its guests and the community," he added.
