Sol Melia becomes Melia Hotels International

09 June 2011 by

Sol Meliá, one of Spain's leading hotel chains, has changed its name to Meliá Hotels International.

The name change is intended to mark the company's plans to increase its presence on the world stage and enhance its position amongst the leading hotel companies around the globe.

Founded in 1956, Meliá Hotels International has more than 350 hotels and 87,000 rooms in 35 countries under seven brands - Gran Meliá, Meliá, ME, Innside, Tryp by Wyndham, Sol and Paradisus.

The group currently has one hotel in London - the four-AA-star, 581-bedroom Meliá White House - and is developing a second hotel under the group's avant-garde luxury brand, ME.

Due to open in 2012, the £160m ME London will have 173 bedrooms, a convention centre, two restaurants and bars. It is being designed by Sir Norman Foster within the former City Bank building, between Covent Garden and Trafalgar Square.

Meliá Hotels International remains family owned with Gabriel Escarrer Juliá, its founder, as chief executive.
