Thirty rising stars to watch – and emulate

This week, we introduce the 2011 Acorn winners and celebrate their success in each being named one of this year's 30 highest achievers in hospitality.

For 25 years we've partnered with Unilever Food Solutions to recognise and applaud the very best talent the industry has to offer. This year's winners display the same dedication, innovation and professionalism as their predecessors.

If we are to maximise the opportunity the 2012 Olympic Games provide for showcasing our industry on a global stage, we need to look to exemplars like this year's Acorn winners: outstanding performers able to deliver excellent products, service and customer care.

I would encourage any of you currently climbing the career ladder to read their stories, draw inspiration from their success - and look to emulate it. As past winner, hotelier Stuart Procter says in this issue, "Never accept that you're too young for the next step: if you're good enough, you're ready."

From hiring and firing, maternity and paternity rights through to employment tribunals, human resource issues are a critical aspect of a well-run business. However, to many, HR can also be a minefield - and a mountain of paperwork.

If this sounds familiar, then we have a solution. Caterer has teamed up with its sister division, XpertHR Small Business, to offer you an easy-to-use website specifically tailored to small- and medium-sized businesses. With a special subscription to XpertHR Small Business available to users and readers of Caterer, it offers you simple and up-to-date advice on employment law and staff issues as well as one year's free legal advice, available 24/7.
