This too will pass

Your editorial (Caterer, 20 July) says it all. Do, by all means, get heated about a bed tax, but more so about Sir Michael Lyons's brief that "local government needs to graduate beyond simple regional administration to a more strategic view of the distinctiveness and development of the communities it serves".

It sounds like another "Prescott" ambition about to go wrong. Who has asked for it? Local government "should" stick to what it knows best - administration - and let the private sector do the rest.

This initiative will go the same way as SIPPS, OFR, ID cards, HIPS, TDS (deposits) and, of course, regional government - I hope!
