Three-AA-rosette Lake District restaurant with rooms on the market

The Cottage in the Wood restaurant with rooms, recently awarded its third AA rosette in the 2016 AA Hospitality Awards, is on the market following owners' Liam and Kath Berney's decision to retire.

Located in Whinlatter forest in Braithwaite, Cumbria, with views towards the Skiddaw mountain range, the nine-bedroom property had a full interior refurbishment in 2008 and further extensive refurbishment in 2011.

The Berneys have run the venue since 2002. The couple left their academic careers to become full-time hoteliers. Kath Berney was a nurse and a lecturer at the University of York. After working as hotel-chef trainer at the Savoy, London, and as a chef at the Midland hotel in Manchester, Liam Berney went on to become head of hospitality and tourism at Stratford-upon-Avon College.

Specialist business property adviser Christie & Co has been instructed to sell the property.

Tom O'Malley, business agent at Christie & Co, said: "Liam and Kath have put everything into the business over the years and because of this, they have reaped the rewards. As a very well-established business with a strong reputation in a unique setting, it would suit anybody with a passion for food and drink: from someone who has worked in the hospitality and catering industry and wants to try their hand at running a successful operation to an existing or multiple operator."
