Venetian hotels launch flood-linked incentives
Hotels in Venice are offering "high-water packages" including discounts and free waders in response to the flooding that has led to a severe drop in bookings.
The Mayor of Venice, Massimo Cacciari, has urged tourists to stay away but Franco Maschiello, head of the local hoteliers' association, said his members would be offering museum tickets and thigh-high rubber boots to visitors, reports The Times.
Accommodation is already heavily discounted - a canal-view suite in the four-star Al Ponte dei Sospiri that was £468 a night in October is now on offer at £160.
Venice is traditionally one of the strongest performers in the global hotel market. In March, the Global Ranking Index report, from consultancy Deloitte, saw the city holding onto first position for the fifth year running, with revenue per available room rising 22% to $265 (£132).
