Joel Pennington named 2026 Gold Service Scholar

Joel Pennington, restaurant manager at the Michelin-starred Cottage in the Wood in Cumbria, has been named the 2026 Gold Service Scholarship Scholar. 

Pennington was presented with the title at a ceremony held at Claridge’s hotel in London, having beaten nine other finalists to the front of house accolade.

Highly commended awards were also presented to Giacomo Arcadu, manager in training at the Lanesborough in London, and Caoimhe Houston, former head waiter at Belmond Le Manoir aux Quat’Saisons in Oxfordshire, in recognition of their performance throughout the competition.

All 10 finalists took part in a practical assessment last month at Kerridge’s Bar & Grill at the Corinthia London. They were tasked with planning, preparing and delivering a three-course lunch for invited guests, including mise en place, guest welcome, tableside preparation of dishes, and wine and beverage service.

Pennington triumphed having impressed the judges with his technical ability, consistency, communication and overall professional conduct. He will receive a bespoke programme of prizes to support his development, including work experience at Mandarin Oriental hotels in Bangkok and Hong Kong, an overseas Rocco Forte hotel and a state banquet at Windsor Castle.
