Michelin-starred London restaurant Mãos is to close on 30 April after four years of trading.

In a note to customers, owner James Brown said the restaurant had "outgrown" its 16-cover space in Shoreditch and the team felt they had "achieved all that we set out to do and more".

Brown founded Mãos with chef Nuno Mendes in 2018 with a mission to "redefine the traditional restaurant experience" within a six-storey townhouse in Shoreditch. Its concept was initially more akin to an intimate supper club than a traditional fine dining restaurant.

Mãos, which won a star in the 2020 Michelin Guide Great Britain and Ireland, serves a £225 a head menu and has a focus on dish research and development.

Mendes stepped away from the project in 2019 and handed the reins to executive chef Edoardo Pellicano.

Brown wrote: "Edoardo thrived in his new role as executive chef and pushed the restaurant to new heights with a level of cooking that to me is unparalleled in London, becoming one of the most brilliantly talented chefs in the culinary world today.

"The success of Mãos is in no small part thanks to our senior sous chef Danny Hoang and junior sous chef Warren Smith, who quietly bring Edoardo's vision to life in the kitchen every day. It is a brotherhood that works in harmony, we never hear raised voices, or see disappointment in the kitchen – only pure rigour, attention to detail and passion for the project with an unwavering work ethic."

He added that the team wanted to close Mãos in its "current form" on a high.

Brown said: "Words cannot describe how proud I am of all that we have achieved, and the memories that have been created within the walls of our intimate and beautiful first-floor restaurant will never be forgotten.

"We are grateful for all of the guests who have been on our journey and for the continued support we have received. We hope to see some of those familiar faces in the near future."

Mãos will run its last service on 30 April.
