Matt Gillan confirms closure of Heritage restaurant

Matt Gillan has confirmed his Heritage fine dining restaurant in Sussex has permanently closed.

In a post on Instagram, the chef said running Heritage had been "an amazing journey" but one he had hoped would end "on a more positive note".

Gillan, who was formerly head chef at the Pass at South Lodge, opened Heritage in 2019 following a successful crowdfunding campaign that raised almost £90,000.

Last year he said the restaurant was transforming into an events-led venue.

But in an update this week, Gillan said Heritage would remain closed after shutting its doors several months ago.

Gillan said: “Apologies for my radio silence over the last few months. As I’m sure many of you have gathered by now, Heritage has been closed for the last few months and will remain closed.

“I tried to navigate our situation as best as I could but unfortunately the cost in doing so was a lot and not just the financial side!

“I know a lot of people have been trying to get in touch to discuss various subjects. Again my apologies. I’ve had no access to the emails, which has not helped iron out any confusion or frustration.”

Gillan said he had set up a new email to deal with queries around outstanding vouchers and suppliers at heritage.slaughham@gmail.com.

He added: “The story of Heritage has been an amazing journey for me, and one I am truly proud of. I just wish it could have ended on a more positive note.

“There have been a huge number of loyal followers along the road and I know I have let many people down over the last few months.

“I intend on making this right, however best I can.”

Gillan was head chef at the Pass while it held a Michelin star and his CV includes stints at Restaurant Gordon Ramsay, London; the Vineyard at Stockcross, Berkshire; and Midsummer House in Cambridge.

He also ran the Red Roaster and Pike & Pine restaurants in Brighton.

Gillan has made multiple appearances on Great British Menu and was chosen to cook the main course at the final banquet in series 10.
