McDonald's to launch first vegan meals

McDonald's will be offering its first vegan meals when it launches veggie dippers on 2 January 2020 in all its UK restaurants.

The dippers have been accredited as vegan by the Vegetarian Society and are made with rice, red pepper, sundried tomato pesto and split peas surrounded by breadcrumbs.

When bought as part of a veggie dippers meal (four dippers, fries and a soft drink for £4.99), or as part of a veggie dippers happy meal (two dippers, side and drink for £2.99), they offer customers the first vegan McDonald's meal.

Thomas O'Neill, head of McDonald's food marketing, said: "In the last 12 months we've seen an 80% uplift in customers ordering vegetarian options at McDonald's, so it is time for the brand famous for the dippable McNugget to launch a dippable option for our vegetarian, vegan and flexitarian customers."

The launch will be just in time for Veganuary where consumers are encouraged to eat vegan for the first month of the year. At the start of 2019 Greggs bakers launched their vegan sausage roll which received coverage in the mainstream press.
