Camra slams pub groups

The Campaign for Real Ale (Camra) has lambasted the UK's pub companies, accusing them of being the "supermarkets of beer".

Speaking ahead of the launch of the Good Beer Guide 2005 on Wednesday (15 September), editor Roger Protz said: "They favour big suppliers over small ones and wrest enormous discounts - discounts that are pocketed and not passed on to publicans or drinkers."

Camra argued that with Enterprise Inns, Punch Taverns, Spirit and Mitchells & Butlers now controlling one-third of the UK's pubs, publicans can only expect their rents and drink prices to continue rising.
