Albion & East to open second site in Brixton

Albion & East, the operator behind Martello Hall in London Hackney which opened last year, is set to open a second site in Brixton's Department Store later this year.

The 4,579 sq ft café and bar, which is set to open in September, is split over a basement and ground floor, with an area for outdoor seating.

During the daytime, the venue will provide a relaxed workspace environment, a menu centred around a wood-fired oven as well as a coffee hatch fronting Stockwell Avenue. It will transform its offer into the evening with cocktails and music.

The Department Store, a development by Squire & Partners architects, is reviving the local landmark to create an evolving hub of creative, retail and community uses. Originally built in 1906 as an annex to the Bonmarché department store, the design of the reimagined space has been informed by existing structural elements and layers of history. Albion & East's interior will similarly showcase the historic characteristics.

Shelley Sandzer acted for Squire and Partners.

Nick Weir, joint managing partner at Shelley Sandzer, which acted for Squire and Partners, said: "It's great to see a budding operator like Albion & East continue to grow and in such a brilliant location. We know this tenant will provide a space that is perfect for employees and locals, feeding into the community and truly putting Brixton on the map."

Openings this week: Ceru, Martello Hall, DoubleTree by Hilton Edinburgh Airport and more >>
